Starting the New Year with BRITE Goals
As we step into the new year, setting goals is a common and powerful way to create focus and momentum. In our January ithrive31 newsletter, we shared our 31-day approach to goal setting. This method encourages you to dream big while breaking down your aspirations into manageable actions that drive progress over the next 31 days.
For the past 10 years, I’ve used this approach myself—writing down my goals 31 days at a time. I use the ithrive31 Goal Setting Worksheet and keep my goals in a frame next to my computer. At the end of each 31-day period, I reflect on my progress without judgment. Some goals I knock out of the park, others I make progress on, and a few I don’t achieve. But that’s okay. Goals are not meant to be punitive—they’re meant to inspire and guide you.
You may be familiar with the S.M.A.R.T. framework for goal setting, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. While this is a helpful starting point, I use an alternative criteria for goal setting that is consistent with the ithrive31 philosophy: the B.R.I.T.E. formula.
The B.R.I.T.E Formula
- Balanced: My goals create alignment in my life. I consider all six of ithrive31’s life areas—Financial, Physical, Emotional, Relationship, Professional, and Spiritual—and aim to set 1–2 meaningful actions in each. This approach considers both my personal and professional goals.
- Realistic: Goals should feel achievable within the next 31 days. Setting realistic short-term goals builds confidence and sustains momentum.
- Important to Me: These goals reflect what matters most to me right now—free from the expectations of others. Meaningful goals feel personal and aligned with my priorities.
- Time-bound: By focusing on the next 31 days, I create urgency and clarity about what needs my attention now.
- Energy: Every action I include on my plan is designed to energize and uplift me. Goals that feel draining often signal the need for a different approach.
As you plan for 2025, I invite you to dream big, plan wisely, and focus on taking inspired action—one step, one day, and one 31-day period at a time. With the B.R.I.T.E. formula, you’ll set goals that not only drive results but also enhance your well-being and bring more balance into your life.
